Stay-In-School Nepal

In general, rural Nepali girls are dropping out of school starting at age 10 at a 10% per annum rate.  A full 50% of the students have left school by Grade 10 primarily due to family and financial pressures.

My 100 Percent teamed with Civic Independence Development in Nepal to create the Stay-in-School Nepal project to combat this high drop-out rate among girls.  The pilot project was created in 2018 with Dr. Arjun Guragain as co-creator and manager.  The concept was to provide the basic school requirements for a five-year period for each of the more than 100 girls in the program in agreement with the child’s parents.  We purchase and directly deliver school supplies, school uniforms and provide other assistance to the neediest girls from the poorest districts within the Sundar-Haraincha municipality.  The provision of supplies alleviates the financial pressures of schooling.  The project is augmented by regular visits to the schools and homes of the children to reinforce the long-term benefits of the program.

The Stay-in-School Nepal project has proven very effective in reducing the high school drop-out rates for girls in rural Nepal due to financial or other pressures.  During the seven years the Stay-in-School Nepal project has operated, we have reduced the annual drop-out rate ten-fold for the girls we support.  Now the girls we support from the poorest areas are graduating high school and even attending university.
